Learn More About Loans

Before you attempt to finance your education, learn more about the kinds of loans available.

Federal Stafford Loans

Two kinds of federal Stafford loans exist.

Subsidized

The subsidized loan is based on need. The federal government 鈥渟ubsidizes鈥 the interest on this loan while you鈥檙e taking classes.

Unsubsidized

The unsubsidized is not need-based. It is available to you regardless of your personal or family income, but you do pay interest while in school. Repayment must begin six months after graduation or when you drop below the required course load.

Private (Alternative) Student Loans

Private (alternative) student loans are credit-based funds from lending institutions that can be used to cover the full cost of attendance after you have maximized scholarships, grants, and federal loans. These loans generally will have a higher interest rate and, although repayment of the principal may be deferred, interest payments could begin immediately.

If you have further questions or need help understanding/applying for loans, call us at 800-752-7043 or email finaid@stmary.edu.
