Staying Healthy in College 鈥 Prevent the Spread of Infectious Diseases

The 糖心视频 urges all students to take reasonable precautions against the spread of infectious disease 鈥 seasonal and otherwise.

Flu: What You Need to Know

The CDC recommends a 3-step approach to fighting the flu.

  1. Get your flu shot.
  2. If you get the flu, early treatment is important.
  3. Everyday preventive actions slow the spread of germs causing respiratory illnesses like the flu.
Flu Facts!
  • The flu is thought to spread from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk.
  • The flu also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose.
  • People may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick.
  • That means you may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you know you are sick as well as while you are sick.
Tips and Tricks
  • Avoid close contact with sick people. And if you鈥檙e sick, limit contact with people.
  • If you get sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone 鈥 except to get medical care or for other necessities. NOTE: The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. And used tissues, should always be tossed in the trash right away!
  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water (singing 鈥淗appy Birthday鈥 twice).
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces that may be contaminated with germs.
