The FNP post-masters certificate program incorporates 24-32 credits, including 780 clinical hours, and prepares the practitioner through a series of theory, practice-focused clinical courses, and an intense preceptorship.

Courses are structured to prepare the clinician to provide evidence-based primary health care to clients and families throughout the lifespan while encouraging collaboration with all members of the care team.

A three-semester option: Prospective students who already hold certification as a nurse practitioner may be eligible for a three-semester schedule that incorporates 780 clinical hours and their associated 24 course credits. To qualify, students must be NP-certified in one of the following areas:

  • Pediatric NP
  • Mental Health NP
  • Acute Care NP
  • Adult Gerontology NP

Specialty FNP Core

Summer Terms

  • NU 773 Advanced Health Assessment & Diagnostic Reasoning 5 credits (3 credits didactic, 1 credit for 60 hours clinical, one credit for lab); A three-day on campus lab intensive is required.

  • NU 785 Primary Care III Clinical Capstone & Practicum for FNP Students (4+4=8 credits); 240 clinical hours; A three-day on campus lab intensive is required.

Fall Term

  • NU 781 - Primary Care I: Management of the Adult/Geriatric Population (4+4=8 credits); 240 clinical hours 

Spring Term

  • NU 783 - Primary Care II: Management of Pediatric and Childbearing Families (4+4=8 credits); 240 clinical hours 


Program Outcomes

  1. Analyze and differentiate complex data sets for independent and collaborative health care decision making for patients across the lifespan.
  2. Communicate in both verbal and written form to provide clear, concise, and complete performance and documentation of patient care.
  3. Apply theory and research in managing and providing care for patients from diverse backgrounds across the lifespan.
  4. Use various technologies to provide optimal care in various settings.
  5. Practice within the scope of the advanced practice role of their state.
  6. Evaluate and function in complex environments. 

Program Mission

Committed to the mission and values of the 糖心视频 and building upon the knowledge, skills, and values of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse, the mission of the MSN program is to prepare students for advanced nursing practice who are leaders, change agents, and innovators in the specialty areas of administration, education, and across all domains of advanced practice.

Admissions Requirements

Students who are seeking the post-masters FNP certificate must:

  • Have a graduate degree in nursing from CCNE, ACEN, or CNEA accredited nursing program
  • Meet the standards for admission into the USM MSN-FNP program, including: 
    • Verification of current unrestricted RN license in the state of Kansas and the state of intended clinical practicum
    • Earned minimum 3.0 GPA in undergraduate nursing study
    • Provide professional or academic letters of recommendation
    • Provide official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate schools
    • Provide a current CV
    • Complete a writing assignment answering the following questions. Maximum 300-word count for each question.
      • Tell us something you are proud of in your academic or professional life.
      • Tell us about a clinical, procedural, or quality issue that required you to research guidelines or articles in nursing literature.
      • Give an example of how you demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion at work or in the community.
    • Have at least one year of clinical experience as a registered nurse
  • Students seeking to move directly into the clinical coursework listed above must have already completed the equivalent Specialty FNP Core curriculum.

The 糖心视频 Master of Science in Nursing-FNP program is competitively priced. Financial aid packages are designed to help you easily manage your education expenses, based on need determined by the .

For the current academic year, the MSN-FNP tuition is $775 a credit hour. Some additional fees may apply depending on your term/course load.

Public Notice of CCNE Accreditation Visit and Invitation for 3rd Party Comments

The 糖心视频 Division of Nursing will host an accreditation visit by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) from September 8 to September 10, 2025. The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) traditional concentrations are currently accredited, and this visit seeks CCNE accreditation for the FNP and PMHNP post-graduate certificate concentrations.

As part of the accreditation process, CCNE invites constituents and stakeholders to submit third-party comments related to the program's qualifications for accreditation. Stakeholders may include, but are not limited to, faculty teaching, students enrolled in the programs, alumni, and other interested parties.

Per CCNE requirements, all third-party comments must be:

  • Written in English

  • Submitted to CCNE by August 16, 2025, which is 21 days before the scheduled visit.
