Dr. Courtney Manago Huhn, U鈥�07, always had a strong desire to become a doctor, and her ambition was realized through her hard work and the foundation she built on the brick roads at the University of Saint Mary.
With the unwavering support of her family, faculty, and generous donors like you, Courtney was able to achieve her dreams and is now making a positive impact in the lives of her patients, inspired by the exceptional role models she encountered at Saint Mary.
鈥淢y first semester at Saint Mary, my family lost everything in a house fire the night before Thanksgiving. I was left on my front lawn in my pajama pants and my Saint Mary Soccer sweatshirt. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but what happened next confirmed that I was in the right place with the right people.
Sister Diane came to the neighbors鈥� house where we were staying on Thanksgiving Day with some money. She said, 鈥業 want you to buy yourself a good pair of jeans鈥� and gave me some cash. I don't even know if it came from her, I have no idea. At the time I didn't even think to ask. But it didn't matter. She took time to think of me and bring that over.
I came back to school that next Monday, and I don't know how everybody found out, but people had copied their notes and gave me copies. I had classmates that would just say, 鈥楬ey, I had an extra notebook, here you go.鈥� Like blank notebooks and pencils. I don't even know who left some. They were just on my desk when I would walk into the class that day. Wow. These were people I'd only known for like, two months, right? To have that was like really really powerful. Then they also did this huge fundraiser and they were just amazing. The university was just incredible. And that's when I was like, OK this is home.鈥�
Courtney is grateful to have received privately funded scholarships and a small athletic scholarship, which helped her graduate with low undergraduate debt. Her story is a testament to the importance of hard work and the value of support from family and donors like you.
